How the Engineering Calculator works
Engineering mode helps you work in powers of 10 (×10^3 steps) and SI-style outputs while keeping the underlying math the same.
- Enter values with units (when applicable) and choose the needed formula/operation.
- Use scientific notation and rounding settings that match your problem.
- Evaluate and check dimensional consistency (units) and order of magnitude.
- Document assumptions and results in Notebook for traceability.
- ENG format displays exponents in multiples of 3 (k, M, G style magnitudes).
- SI format can show common SI prefixes for readability.
- Explain panel provides an evaluation trace to verify complex expressions.
- Use history to compare design variants quickly.
Engineering notation vs scientific notation
Scientific notation can use any exponent. Engineering notation restricts exponents to multiples of 3, which aligns with metric prefixes.
This affects how numbers are displayed, not the computed value.
Precision and rounding
- Rounding changes display only; internal results may keep more precision.
- For critical engineering work, cross-check with authoritative references and design standards.
